Summary from Goodreads: Stealing another galactic secret will get her arrested, but playing by the rules might just get her killed.
At twenty-three, Renna Carrizal is the most notorious thief in the galaxy. There's just one problem - all she wants is to get out of the business.

But after Renna rescues an injured boy on her final job, she finds herself on the run from the mob instead of enjoying retirement. She unwittingly becomes ensnared by MYTH, a top-secret galactic protection agency who offer her a choice - either help them on their latest mission, or spend the rest of her life on a prison ship.
Forced to work under the watchful eye of handsome but arrogant Captain Finn, Renna learns the former mercenary-turned-hero has a few dirty secrets himself. As Renna works to discover the truth about Finn's past and keep the tantalizing man at arm's length, she unearths a plot to create an unstoppable army. The target? The human star fleet.

Now Renna must pull off the biggest job of her career - saving the galaxy. And maybe even herself.

The Star Thief was a really fun surprise as far as I was concerned.  I used to occasionally like to read sci-fi, but somewhere along the way I got bored with it.  I just couldn't connect. So, I was hoping to like this book, but wasn't really expecting to enjoy it the same way I've been enjoying my paranormal or contemporary reads.  Well, guess what?  I was wrong.  This book was great - it had all of the excitement and action of a sci-fi adventure story (complete with lots of cool gadgets), but it still had heart.

The negatives:
  • Could have used more development of the secondary characters.  While I really liked the secondary characters in this book, they could have used a bit more fleshing out.  I thought that Finn and Viktis (the two men in Renna's life - not that there's truly a love triangle) were relatively well defined, and Myka (the boy that Renna is trying to rescue) is a cute and scrappy kid, but all of the other characters are just in the background.  Renna is really the star of the show, and she's the only character that you really get to know.
What I LOVED:
  • Renna.  Like I said, Renna is the star of the show, so it's a good thing she's star material. She's the type of tough, smart, funny, capable heroine that we love to see. She's used to taking care of herself and to looking out for number one, so when things start to get complicated and she starts to actually build relationships with people, she gets a bit nervous.  I loved that, even though she's a thief, she has her own moral code - one that makes sense and that I could relate to.  I also appreciated learning more and more about Renna's past as the book went on.
  • The romance.  I was definitely a fan of Renna and Finn right from the beginning.  It was obvious when things started out that there was some sort of misunderstanding between them and I was hooked right away, wondering what had really happened back when they had worked together many years ago.  Once you (and they) discover what really happened, things move pretty quickly between these two, but it all made sense based on their past history.  And there's no love at first sight here - Renna definitely has feelings for Finn, but she doesn't ever claim to be in love with him (or he with her).  They just have this attraction and connection that they want to explore.  That was kind of refreshing.
  • The sci-fi action.  This book is full of sci-fi action - including space travel, alien races, cyborgs, brain implants, tech empaths ... the list goes on.  I was really loving the Star Trek feel!  :-)
If you're looking for a sci-fi adventure novel with a great main character and some steamy scenes, then this is a great choice!   Since this book ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, I'm definitely looking forward to finding out what happens next!  I give it 4.5/5 stars.
