Top Ten Tuesday (Required Reading) & Teaser Tuesday (Beautifully Broken by Sherry Soule)

Today's Top Ten Tuesday is:

Top Ten Books That Should be Required Reading

I started out taking this list semi-seriously (semi is the key word here) and then moved on to just plain silly:
  1. You Are Mine by Janeal Falor - I just read this book (review is coming soon) and I think that students could actually get a lot out of reading it!  It would teach about gender discrimination and xenophobia and would spark great discussions about how society's norms dictate what we say and do.
  2. The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan - This one might be for the younger ones, but I'll bet there are teachers who actually use it to help get kids interested in mythology.
  3. Storm by Brigid Kemmerer - This book teaches a lot about bullying and touches on teen sexual assault. Girls and guys alike should take the messages in this book and apply them to life.  Maybe they could read this in a health/sex ed class?  (Okay, it's a stretch, I know, but this list can't be taken completely seriously!)
  4. Viral Nation by Shaunta Grimes - With an autistic main character, teens would learn to appreciate differences.
  5. Delirium by Lauren Oliver - What is the difference between a mental "illness" and an emotion or a difference in personality? This should be studied in Psychology class!
  6. Unwind by Neal Shusterman - This book presents so many questions about the importance of life and freedom, but doesn't try to give us all the answers. Great for debate!
  7. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins - In case the kids ever find themselves in a situation where they are hunted by other kids.  (Actually, I think there are a lot of great themes in this book that could be explored).
  8. Slammed by Colleen Hoover - Why falling for your teacher can only lead to heartache.  A must for all those teen girls.
  9. Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion - How to save the world if there's a zombie apocalypse. Very important skill to have. (Who knew it involved falling in love with a zombie?)
  10. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams - This book teaches you about Life, the Universe and Everything. Oh, and it teaches you the meaning of life. What could be more useful than that?
So, what books do you wish they taught in school?

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

~Grab your current read
~Open to a random page
~Share two (2) "teaser" sentences from somewhere on the page
~BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! ( make sure that what you share doesn't give away to much away! You don't want to ruin the book for others!)
~Share the title & author too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR lists if they like your teasers!
- Then go on over to Should be Reading and share your teaser in her comments section!

My teaser today is from an book I got from Story Cartel.  I'm only about a third of the way through, but I'm really enjoying it so far.

by Sherry Soule

When sixteen-year-old Shiloh Trudell takes a summer job at Craven Manor, she discovers a ghost with an agenda. That’s where she meets the new town hottie, Trent Donovan, and immediately becomes enchanted by his charms.

With cryptic messages from a pesky wraith, Shiloh will finally begin to understand the mysterious significance of the strange mark branded on her wrist and decide how much she’s willing to sacrifice to protect the other teenagers in town...

Teaser:
My mouth dried. My hands fisted. I was so tempted to yell back at Ghost Lady, "Stop with all the cryptic messages already!"
