Today is day 3 of the Summer Lovin' Read-a-thon and today's topic is My Favorite, Fictional Female Character. These "favorite" questions are always hard for me because I don't really have many all-time favorites. Instead, my current favorites tend to be from books that I've recently read. So, I'm going to go with my favorite female character from a book that I've read in the past three months. There were a few contenders; I really loved Quinn from Colour Wielders by Dawna Raver, Clover from Viral Nation by Shaunta Grimes, Allie from The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa, Evangeline from Poison Princess by Kresley Cole, and Addison from Pivot Point by Kasie West. But, who should I choose as my favorite? Oh, the agony - how to decide? I finally settled on -

Allie |
Allie from the Blood of Eden series by Julie Kagawa!
I absolutely love this picture of her (which I found on a blog called Reading After Midnight). I love Allie because she is amazingly strong and yet vulnerable. She is constantly battling against the demon inside of her (and usually winning) and she never gives up on humanity, even when things seem incredibly grim. She is definitely one of my all-time favorite female characters!
As a side note, I actually do have an all-time favorite female fictional character, but she's not from a book--unless you count books that were written after the show was created; but I haven't actually read any of these (except the graphic novels), so it feels like cheating to count them. Still, hands down, my favorite fictional character of all time (not even just my favorite female) is Buffy the Vampire Slayer!!
Buffy was the ultimate everything as far as I was concerned - Ordinary girl turned super-ultra-extraordinary (I know that's nothing new now, but it was to me then). Buffy was full of snark and never let anyone walk all over her, but she was also vulnerable and completely dedicated to her friends. My love of paranormal reading can be easily traced back to Buffy!

So, I was just going to start Slammed by Colleen Hoover yesterday, but hadn't gotten around to it because I spent my time working on copyediting and reading The Copyeditor's Handbook. (Am I the only crazy person who really enjoys reading books about grammar and syntax? I think I must be.)
Anyway, I thought maybe a little teaser would get me so interested in the book that I just had to put everything else aside! So, I flipped to page 99 and here's what I read:
Hmmm... I smell an angst-ridden love story here. Will seems like the sweet, vulnerable type (at least from this one page!), which I like. I love that the mom is actually involved in a YA book - you don't see that all that often. While, I don't know that this page made me feel the need to jump up and read the book immediately, I'm definitely interested to find out what happens. Hoping to start on this book today!
Progress on My Goals:
Day 1: Finished reading Branded by Abi Ketner and Missy Kalicicki.
Completed Challenges (Introduction and Teaser Tidbit)
Day 2: Read 150 pages of The Copyeditor's Handbook (okay, it's not fiction and technically wasn't one of my goal books, but it's still reading!)
Completed Challenges (Must-Have Summer Reads and Cover Re-do)
Anyway, I thought maybe a little teaser would get me so interested in the book that I just had to put everything else aside! So, I flipped to page 99 and here's what I read:
Layken has apparently just complained to Will (I'm guessing he's the love interest in the book) about something her mom did. He is rather upset and says she shouldn't be so mad - she's lucky to even have a mom. Layken then feels guilty, realizing that she has just complained about her mom when Will has no parents at all. She then goes home and makes lunch for her mom and then apologizes.

So true - it is nice to see a mm in the YA book.
ReplyDeleteI've been anting to read Slammed for a while and it does seem like an angsty -- I've heard really good things.
Congrats on the goals you've completed.
Thanks - I'll let you know how I like Slammed!
DeletePlease do. I read Hopeless and thought it was okay. I am curious about slammed though, cause it is completely different.
DeleteAlso, following via bloglovin :)
Ah, Blood of Eden is one of those series that I feel like I HAVE to pick up. It sounds really interesting and awesome. Plus, a kickass MC? Always a good thing. Happy to see Buffy up there too!
